The Port of Gothenburg has awarded NCC a contract to design and build a new terminal for Stena Line at Arendal, advancing plans to consolidate the ferry operator’s Gothenburg operations at the outer port.
The new terminal, scheduled to begin operations in 2031, will bring Stena Line’s Germany and Denmark services together at Arendal, adjacent to existing port operations and logistics infrastructure. The relocation will free the land occupied by Stena Line’s current terminals in central Gothenburg for urban development.
“The move to Arendal gives us good conditions for our continued transition and the opportunity to meet the needs of both freight customers and passengers,” said Niclas Mårtensson, CEO of Stena Line.
Stena Line said the new terminal can be designed from the outset to accommodate new environmentally friendly vessels it has on order.
The NCC contract will be carried out as a design-build project in partnership with the Port of Gothenburg. Planning and design will include development of the facility and preparation of cost estimates, with Sweco serving as design consultant.
Work is expected to include upgrades to terminal areas and water and wastewater systems; adaptation and refurbishment of existing Arendal berths; extension of one berth; foundations for new movable ramps; electricity and fiber installations; and new perimeter protection and security systems.
Design and cost-estimating work is scheduled for 2027. Construction could begin in early 2028, subject to the project receiving a legally binding environmental permit and its estimated cost remaining within available funding.
The environmental permit is currently being considered by Sweden’s Land and Environment Court.
“This is an important project for the Port of Gothenburg, for Stena Line and for the entire city,” said Torbjörn Spetz, Head of Infrastructure at the Port of Gothenburg.
